Description

Later 18th century. Near rectangular plan walled garden with addition of 2nd compartments to S. Random rubble walls with flat coping; brick wall between compartments; roughly squared and snecked rubble walls to S chamber with flat coping and long and short quoins. Ashlar doorway to E of N wall, surmounted by pediment to exterior; timber lintel to interior; ironwork gate. Early 20th century damaged timber gate to centre of wall between compartments. E walls swept up to central gateway with ironwork gates. Infilled doorway to right of S wall.

Statement of Interest

A Group with Baberton House (see separate listing). The pediment above the doorway to the walled garden is suggestive of the work of James Murray (the architect of Baberton House), and was quite possibly part of the original SE elevation before the 1765 infill. However, it is difficult to accurately date the garden, especially as no potting sheds and greenhouses survive.
