Later 19th century. Water pump (approximately 4' high) and Kennedy well (approximately 2' high) sited to W end of Main Street.
Kennedy well; base with fluted cast-iron column and lionhead mask water spout below roll-moulded cornice and fluted domed cap, marked 'GLENFIELD COY LTD, KILMARNOCK'. Water pump in timber casing with cast-iron handle.
Unusual survival of a once common-place communal utility. The Kennedy wells were a form of permanent standpipe made by Glenfield and Kennedy; the ribbed knob operated an internal valve controlling the flow of water from an underground pipe.
