Description

Early 20th century. Circular plan, coursed brick sheep stell with semi circular cast concretecoping. Small rectangular plan brick building adjacent to opening to SE; boarded timber door to SE elevation, flanked to right by advanced section of wall; boarded timber opening set in gablehead above; window set in gablehead of NW elevation. Corrugated iron roof.

Statement of Interest

The sheep stell emerged shortly after the sheep house (see separate listing for Huntly Cot, Glede Knowe Sheep House) in the early to mid 19th century. As sheep breeds became more hardy the need for a covered shelter, which was offered by the sheep house, was deemed unnecessary so it was replaced by the circular enclosure, with a high boundary wall to provide shelter. Hirendean Hill sheep stell, located close to Hirendean Castle (Scheduled Ancient Monument) is particularly unusual as it is so late in date (few being built after the 19th century).
