Earlier 19th century. Single storey, rectangular plan sheep house; rebuilt by present owner (from predominantly original materials) in late 20th century. Flat coped, random rubble walls, swept up to central gate way to SE forming gables for roof ends; long and short quoins; exterior wall to left of gate way supported by battered buttress.
INTERIOR: square plan tooled, squared and snecked sandstone columns, with occasional brick snecks; timber lintels; pantiled roof with terracotta ridge; hecks around internal walls; opening to centre of SW wall, boarded timber gables to flanking blocks.
Sheep houses, similar in form to this example with a roofed area surrounding an open court, appear to originate in the early 19th century. The sheep house was superseded shortly afterwards by the sheep stell, which did not provide the sheep with covered shelter. This particular example is one of the few surviving sheep houses in Midlothian. The masonry suggests that it is of early 19th century date, although it first appears on the 2nd Edition OS Maps of 1892. Robin Callander notes that "No square sheep houses built after 1853 had pillars" (p5).
