Description

Early to earlier 19th century with later additions and alterations Symmetrical single storey and attic, 3-bay gate lodge with single storey, lean-to addition at rear. Whitewashed harl; painted margins; projecting cills.

SE (ENTRANCE) ELEVATION: 2-leaf boarded timber door centred at ground; 2-pane fanlight; timber-bracketed gabled canopy above. Venetian windows at ground in flanking bays; bipartite windows breaking eaves in piended dormerheads above.

NW (REAR) ELEVATION: lean-to addition off-set to left with single windows at ground; box dormer centred above.

Predominantly timber sash and case windows (Y-tracery to Venetian openings); modern glazing at rear; small rooflight. Grey slate roof; iron rainwater goods. Coped, whitewashed apex stacks; circular terracotta cans.

INTERIOR: not seen 1998.

COBBLED FORECOURT: decorative cobbled path to front.

QUADRANT WALLS, PIERS, GATEPIERS AND GATES: coped, harled and whitewashed walls flanking entrance. Squat, square-plan outer piers; square-plan gatepiers with shallow hemispherical caps; 2-leaf decorative iron gates.

Statement of Interest

B Group comprises Kames Cottages, Kames House, Kames North Entrance, Kames Stables, Kames Walled Garden and Kames West Lodge (see separate list entries). A well-detailed gate lodge set to the W of Kames House. The Venetian windows, canopied entrance and cobbled forecourt are particularly notable.
