Late 18th century with later alterations and additions. 2-storey and attic, 3-bay rectangular-plan, near-symmetrical former town house, now converted as shop at ground with accommodation above; abutting 53 and 55 Victoria Street (not listed) to right; Gunn's Close to left. Harled with cement dressings at ground; cement-rendered and lined at 1st floor. Cement band course between floors.
E (PRINCIPAL) ELEVATION: deep-set modern part-glazed door at ground in bay to centre; large modern shop windows with small pane upper border in each bay flanking. Irregularly disposed window in each bay at 1st floor above.
S (GUNN'S CLOSE) ELEVATION: small attic window, set to right, to gable; gablehead stack above.
W (REAR) ELEVATION: large, asymmetrical 3-bay lean-to additions spanning bays to right; tall wallhead stack offset to right of centre. 3 small, evenly disposed attic windows to main block above.
2- over single pane timber sash and case windows at 1st floor; modern shop windows at ground. Grey slate to E pitch; purple slate to W pitch; corrugated-iron to rear lean-to; stone ridge; harled, corniced gablehead stacks to N and S; tall harled, coped wallhead stack to W; uPVC rainwater goods.
INTERIOR: converted as shop at ground; unseen above, 1998.
A substantial Kirkwall town house, converted at ground to a shop. Features of interest include the characteristic wide gap between 1st floor windows and eaves, and the substantial gablehead stacks.
