Description

Mid 19th century with later additions and alterations. Pair of single storey with attic, 3-bay cottages forming symmetrical 6-bay block; made into 1 late 20th century; lean-to addition at rear. Squared and snecked tooled cream sandstone rubble; stugged sandstone dressings; dry-dashed elevations to sides and rear addition. Stugged quoins; stugged long and short surrounds to droved and chamfered openings; projecting, painted cills; gabled dormers. Architraved hoodmoulds; timber-mullioned bipartites.

E (ENTRANCE) ELEVATION: boarded timber doors in penultimate bays to outer left and right; single windows in bays to outer left and right; bipartite windows in bays flanking centre; bipartite dormers breaking eaves above (blind armorial shields centred in gableheads).

N (SIDE) ELEVATION: blind.

W (REAR) ELEVATION: near full-width, lean-to addition at centre with timber door to left; single and bipartite windows in remaining bays to right. Blind bays recessed to outer left and right.

S (SIDE) ELEVATION: 2-leaf glazed door centred at ground.

Diamond-paned casement glazing to front; plate glass timber sash and case windows to rear; modern rooflights at rear. Grey slate roof; stone ridging; bracketed skewputts; cast-iron rainwater goods. Corniced, brick-built ridge and apex stacks; various circular cans.

INTERIOR: converted into single property; timber stair in place.

Statement of Interest

A picturesque pair of former farm cottages, converted into a single property in the 1980s. Originally associated with the nearby Preston Farm. Set to the W of, and facing, a similarly detailed, but apparently earlier, cottage block - itself still 2 properties (see separate list entry Nos 8 & 9 Preston Farm Cottages).
