Description

Earlier 19th century (circa 1830) with later additions and alterations. Symmetrical 2-storey with basement, 3-bay plain classical house with lower 2-storey wing at rear off-set to left of centre, forming near T-plan. Ribbon-pointed pink sandstone rubble to front; heavily-pointed rubble to NE (side); harled to SW (side); coursed render at rear. Narrow quoin strips; tooled sandstone quoins; tooled long and short surrounds to openings; margins; projecting cills. Single storey with attic, near L-plan former coach house set to NW.

SE (ENTRANCE) ELEVATION: glazed, lean-to porch addition centred at ground; single window aligned at 1st floor. Single windows at both floors in flanking bays.

SW (SIDE) ELEVATION: original block to right with single window centred at ground. 2-storey wing slightly recessed to outer left.

NW (REAR) ELEVATION: projecting wing to right with single windows at both floors (upper window breaking eaves). Irregularly fenestrated range recessed to left.

NE (SIDE) ELEVATION: original block to left with single window at 1st floor in bay to outer left. Lower wing recessed to outer right with single window at 1st floor off-set to left of centre.

Predominantly 12-pane glazing in timber sash and case windows; some modern glazing at rear. Grey slate piended roof. Brick-built wallhead stacks to SW and NE; various cans. Cast-iron rainwater goods.

INTERIOR: not seen 1998.

FORMER COACH HOUSE: rendered rubble. SE (ENTRANCE) ELEVATION: original block to left with large, 2-leaf boarded timber door centred at ground; boarded opening aligned above. Full-height, single bay addition recessed to right with boarded timber door at ground. Grey slate roof. INTERIOR: not seen 1998.

BOUNDARY WALL: heavily-pointed low rubble wall enclosing site to front.

Statement of Interest

A well-detailed, fundamentally intact, plain classical house. Said to have been built some time after the similarly-detailed house to its right - see separate list entry for 'Ayton, Beanburn, Summerhill including former Coach House'.
