Late 19th century. Single storey and attic, 7-bay near H-plan asymmetrical former service block for 25 Croft Street (see separate listing); now in use as private residence. Stugged ashlar sandstone to core; stugged, squared and snecked single storey entrance projection to outer left at entrance elevation and single storey 2-bay lean-to addition to right at entrance elevation. Stugged dressings; projecting cills; stop-chamfered arrises to principal elevation; stone mullions to bipartite and tripartite windows to principal elevation.

NW (ENTRANCE) ELEVATION: single storey entrance projection to outer left comprising modern 6-panel timber door with radial semicircular fanlight to right of centre; regular fenestration to 3 bays at centre; modern glazed timber door to right and window to left in single storey, 2-bay lean-to addition to right; window in remaining bay at outer right, with small light in re-entrant angle.

NE GABLE: window to right of centre and at outer right at ground.

SE (PRINCIPAL) ELEVATION: pair of tripartite windows flanking centre at ground; advanced gable to right surmounted by decorative gablehead bellcote, French windows centred at ground with 2-pane rectangular fanlight, enclosed by modern conservatory on brick base built out at ground; advanced gable to left surmounted by stone finial, comprising bipartite window to left of centre at ground, window to right of centre at ground; window centred at attic; timber panelled door to re-entrant angle to right.

SW GABLE: window to left of centre at attic.

INTERIOR: not seen, 1999.

Variety of timber sash and case windows. Graded grey slate roof with lead ridge, swept down to entrance projection at rear; tarred asphalt roof to lean-to addition to entrance elevation. Some modern skylights to entrance elevation. 2 regularly-spaced louvered slate-hung dormerhead ventilators to principal elevation, 3 to entrance elevation. Cast-iron rainwater goods. Gablehead and shouldered wallhead stacks; coped, with circular cans. Sawtooth coped skews, with some gablet skewputts.

Statement of Interest

27 Croft Street is the former service block for 25 Croft Street, used as a schoolhouse when the latter was built as a rectory for the St James the Less Church (see separate listing).
