Description

Mid to later 19th century. 2-storey, 3-bay symmetrical classical villa. Coursed, tooled sandstone, with raised polished long and short quoins. Base course; eaves course surmounted by cornice and blocking course, with central tablet. Raised margins with projecting cills.

SW (PRINCIPAL) ELEVATION: advanced pilastered and corniced doorpiece, deep-set 4-panel timber door with 2-pane fanlight. Windows flanking and to each bay at 1st floor.

SE AND NW ELEVATIONS: harled, blank.

NE (REAR) ELEVATION: not seen, 1999.

12-pane timber sash and case windows. Grey slate piended roof, with lead ridges. Rendered and lined wallhead stacks; coped, with circular cans.

INTERIOR: not seen, 1999.

BOUNDARY WALLS: low coursed ashlar boundary walls with coping at street; surmounted by modern railings.

Statement of Interest

No 51 John Street is similar in appearance to No 55 (see separate listing). John Street continues to be the main route to Edinburgh northwards from the town centre.
