A H L Mackinnon, circa 1900. 3-storey and attic, 12-bay school with classical detailing. Tooled grey granite with finely finished dressings and margins. Rough-faced base course; dividing band course between ground and 1st floors; Gibbs surround windows to 1st floor; 2nd floor finely finished, pilastered bays; eaves course; overhanging eaves with timber modillion mouldings.
W (PRINCIPAL) ELEVATION: symmetrical; bays grouped 3-3-3-3; 2 groups of 3 bays to centre, regular fenestration to ground, 1st and 2nd floors, 7-light rectangular dormer to left of attic floor; 3 bays to left and right slightly advanced and pedimented, regular fenestration to each floor, oeil-de-beuf window centred in pediment.
S ELEVATION: asymmetrical; 9-bay, grouped 2-1-3-3; ground floor predominantly obscured by flat-roofed modern addition, regular fenestration behind; 3 bays to right advanced, regular fenestration to ground, 1st and 2nd floors, windows to ground and 1st floors of left return; regular fenestration to flanking bays to left on all floors.
E ELEVATION: not seen 1999.
N ELEVATION: asymmetrical; 9-bay, grouped 3-3-1-2; ground floor predominantly obscured by flat-roofed modern addition, regular fenestration behind; 3 bays to left advanced, regular fenestration to ground, 1st and 2nd floors, 4-light rectangular dormer to attic floor, windows to right return; regular fenestration to flanking bays to right on all floors.
Modern PVCu glazing. Piended grey slate roof with lead ridges. Corniced granite stacks breaking pitch, circular cans. Cast-iron rainwater goods.
INTERIOR: not seen 1999.
SERVITOR'S HOUSE: tooled Aberdeen bond granite Servitor's House to SW of school. Rough-faced base course; polished margins; overhanging eaves with queenpost detail to gables.
N (Entrance) Elevation: symmetrical; gableted doorway with glazed timber door and letterbox fanlight to centre bay, tripartite windows flanking to left and right.
W Elevation: window to centre.
S Elevation: broad gabled bay to left with bipartite window to centre, doorway to flanking bay to right.
E Elevation: not seen 1999.
Modern metal-framed glazing. Piended grey slate roof with lead ridges. Corniced granite stacks flanked by scrolled ornaments to E and W breaking pitch, circular cans. Cast-iron rainwater goods.
Interior: not seen 1999.
GATES, GATEPIERS, BOUNDARY WALLS AND RAILINGS: square-plan granite ashlar gatepiers with rough-faced base course and coped pyramidal caps to N and W, flanked by low rough-faced walls surmounted by iron railings, some decorative; 2-leaf decorative iron gates; rubble walls to E with pointed granite coping.
The imposing Mile-End Primary School was built to serve the communities of Mid Stocket and the surrounding area, as Aberdeen rapidly expanded westwards from the middle of the 19th century. Both the school and Servitor's House are well detailed classically derived buildings.
