Description

R Roberts, 1882. 4-storey, 4-bay tenement, part of Scottish 17th century style terrace. Squared and snecked sandstone with polished ashlar dressings. Base course; cornice above ground floor; string course at 3rd floor; deep-set panelled doors; plate glass fanlights; chamfered reveals.

W (entrance) elevation: relieving arches to nook-shafted doorway and single window in bay to inner left; 2 round- arched doorways in bay to inner right. Full-height canted windows to outer left and right; dividing cornices; outer left bay corbelled to square at gablehead; square floral patera inset in gablehead; ground floor central light pedimented and hexagonal pyramidal roof to bay to outer right. Bipartite windows to central bays; advanced 3rd floor windows breaking eaves in crowstepped dormerheads. Central framed and pedimented datestone "1884" above 1st floor.

Plate glass sash and case windows; uPVC replacements at 2nd floor No 89. Grey slate roof; central corniced T-section wallhead stack with shoulders linked to dormerheads; corniced mutual stacks; moulded cans; scrolled skewputts.

Interiors: not seen 1990.

Low saddleback wall to street.

Statement of Interest

Forms continuous irregular terrace with 77-87 and 95-129 (odd nos) Marchmont Road and 2-10 (inc) Beaufort Road. Designed for John Souden, builder.
