Late 19th century. Circular pigsty and single storey shed. Rubble flagstones.
PIGSTY
Doorway to E; rectangular yard to front (E). Conical roof; rubble flagstones.
SHED
Door to S; plain gable ends. Low lean-to shed to rear (N). Pitched roof; crude crowstepped gables; large stone slabs to roof; single glazing pane in roof.
Situated apart from Lochside house and farm buildings, the pigsty is no longer in use. The date of the sty is uncertain. Small circular buildings were easier to build, no corners were necessary, thus removing the weak points and making the building more pig-proof. This sty serves to remind that pigs were once commonly found on Orkney farms. There are a number of circular pigsties remaining in S Wales, and a few in Orkney, however, this is the only remaining one found on Westray.
