Military Prison, Edinburgh Castle

A Category B Listed Building in Edinburgh, Edinburgh

Uploader's Comments

The Victorian military prison inside the Castle was opened in 1842. Some reconstructed cells give an impression of conditions in what was regarded at the time as an example of enlightened prison reform. In 1916, during the First World War, David Kirkwood, the Marxist revolutionary of 'Red Clydeside' fame, was imprisoned here for making speeches contravening the Defence of the Realm Act. The prison was closed in 1923 when the Castle ceased to hold a permanent garrison.
