OLD COLLEGE GATES: 1636. part of entrance gateway moved from Old College, Glasgow. 2 rubble piers supporting stone lintel and strapwork pediment. Weathervane to apex, later addition (gate stands within the boundary of lot 5)
Originally named Stanley House the name has been changed upon the surrounding grounds being sold off as building lots. Local legend has it that the house was built for the new minister by a local landowner's daughter in an unsuccessful attempt to win his hand. It is not known how the Glasgow Old College gate came to be in the grounds of Stanley House though most of the college was variously relocated when the railway cut through its city centre site in the earlier 19th century.
