Description

Probably early to earlier 19th century (see Notes) single storey 4-bay gabled kennels with low flat coped rubble sandstone walls with iron railings forming enclosed runs to the West and East. Squared and coursed whinstone rubble with sandstone dressings. Pedimented ashlar portico to South (entrance) elevation with shouldered openings. Gable stacks. Corrugated metal roof.

A-Group comprises 'Callendar House' (HB 31236), and the associated 'Glenbrae Lodge and Gates' (HB 31235), 'Callendar House, Small Bridge on South Axis of House' (HB 31237), 'Callendar House Sundial' (HB 31238), 'Stable Court, Including Cobbled Yard' (HB 31239), 'Stable Block Including Dovecot, Cobbled Yard, Implement Shed, Boundary Walls and Gates' (HB 46544), 'Factor's House' (HB 46545), 'Dry Bridge' (HB 31240), 'Mausoleum' (HB 31241), 'Atrium House (Former Gardener's Cottage), Including Gatepiers' (HB 50224), 'Policy Walls' (HB 50896) and 'Wellhead' (HB 50897), see separate entries.

A good example of a 19th century kennels with, unusually, runs to both elevations. The kennels form an integral part of the Callendar Estate and were an essential part of a hunting estate's ancillary structures. It appears on the 1st edition Ordnance Survey map. It is likely that the aggrandising pedimented portico is of a later date. It may have been added in the 1870s when Brown & Wardrop was remodelling Callendar House.
