Mid 19th century. Substantial, rectangular-plan walled garden situated approximately 700 metres NW of Thirlestane Castle within the Thirlestane Castle Estate. Predominantly squared and snecked rubble walls with rounded rubble coping. Swept corners, chamfered at S elevation. Squared, coped entrance piers beside NW angle. Some red sandstone ashlar dressings to secondary openings. Run of single-storey lean-to garden stores of squared and snecked whinstone rubble with red ashlar dressings adjoins outside wall to N.
A-group with 'Castle Wynd, Hume Lodge Including Boundary Wall to N and W', 'East High Street, Wyndhead Stables Lodge', 'Thirlestane Castle (Including Eagle Gates and Boundary Walls)', 'Thirlestane Castle Estate, Garden Cottage' and 'Thirlestane Castle Estate, Stables Offices' (see separate listings).
This large walled garden forms an integral part of the wider policies at Thirlestane which appear to have been largely laid out in their present form by the eighth, ninth and eleventh Earls of Lauderdale. Its size and substantial construction with sweeping corners add to its interest. Thirlestane Garden Cottage (see separate listing), by William Burn, is situated near the NW corner of the walled garden, adding to the group interest. The walled garden was sold by the Thirlestane Estate in 1958 and purchased back by Gerald Maitland-Carew following his inheritance of the Castle in 1970. The walls are currently being restored (2008).
