Description

Mid to later 19th century. Well-detailed single storey, 2-bay Tudor Gothic Lodge, sited at W entrance to Moncreiffe Estate and originally marking principal entrance. Dwarf walls flank stone steps leading to fine buttressed stone porch with arcaded balustrade, square-plan transomed tripartite window overlooking drive, jerkinhead roof and prominent ashlar stack. Squared stugged ashlar with polished quoins and margins. Raised base course, voussoirs, raked cills, stone transoms and mullions, and chamfered arrises.

FURTHER DESCRIPTION: principal entrance to N with advanced gabled bay at left and set-back boarded timber door with decorative ironwork hinges, latch and knocker to gabled porch in re-entrant angle to right. W (road) elevation with balustraded arch in porch at left and 4-light window in jerkinheaded bay to right.

Some multi-pane glazing pattern upper sashes over diamond pattern lower sashes and plate glass glazing, all in timber sash and case windows. Grey slates. Large coped and shaped ridge stack. Cast iron downpipes with decorative fixings.

INTERIOR: not seen 2009.

GATE AND QUADRANT WALLS: Gothic-arched pedestrian gateway at S of drive and low deeply crenelated quadrant walls with inset timber balustrade.

B Group with Moncreiffe House, Stables, Walled Garden and Ha-Ha, Dairy, Dovecote, Filter Bed and Water Tank, Gamekeeper's Cottage, Garden Cottage and East Gate.

The West Lodge at Moncreiffe is a fine survival, and together with the pedestrian gateway which is a remnant of the West Gate it forms an integral part of the estate buildings. The principal entrance appears to have moved from its former location at the earlier East Lodge (now demolished) as photographs dating from circa 1875 show a grand crenellated Gothic-arched vehicular entrance with flanking pedestrian gates beside the West Lodge. The early photograph shows quadrant walls with inset decorative ironwork railings, which match the gates. Many of the details were echoed at the separately listed East Gate.

A long boundary wall linking the two gated entrances and extending along the public road toward Perth is thought to have been built by soldiers returning from the Peninsular War in the early 19th century.

Early gate lodges were often simple boxes, but from the early years of the 19th century the type developed to become significant architectural additions advertising the quality and aspirations within the carefully marked estate boundary.

Moncreiffe House dates from 1962, it replaces a house destroyed by fire in 1957.
