History

Early C19 and associated with the court house almost opposite.

Exterior

Georgian-fronted inn. A two-unit range comprising main inn to right and accommodation block to left. Rendered and painted with shallow pitch slate roof and low stacks: at end right and shared with no. 60 and at division between units. Main unit has a 3-window range of 16-pane sashes in painted surrounds with stone sills; similar to ground floor either side of central panelled doorcase with round-headed doorway with 4-panelled door; cellar entrance below window to right; plinth. Unit to left has 12-pane sashes in painted surrounds to each floor and two 4-panelled doors.

Interior

Inn interior has small open fireplace with timber lintel at front left. Bar incorporates good quality polished woodwork reputedly from a ship. Substantially extended to rear. A through passage leads from right doorway of left unit; stairs rise off to hotel rooms on first floor.

Reasons for Listing

Listed as an inn retaining historic fabric and character, part of the lower Maryport Street range. Historic connections and group value with The Sessions House opposite and Usk Prison.
