History

Early/mid C18, and apparently built very closely in date with No.7 (qv), it was then re-windowed in C19. The street elevation has been unaltered since apart from rendering, and there are some changes to the rear elevation.

Exterior

Roughcast rendered and painted over red brick with floor bands, Welsh slate roof. Double depth plan with entry to right. Three storeys, two windows set almost flush with the wall, 1 over 1 pane sashes under segmental arches, upper floor windows are smaller and flat topped.
6-panel door with transom light and hood on brackets.
Plain roof with narrow stacks on both gables.
Rear elevation has some 6 over 6 pane sashes, but there is also a two storey hipped pantiled roof wing with steel casement windows.

Interior

The interior has been much altered but it retains a two period staircase with an early C19 stick baluster stair with mahogany handrail from ground to first floor and an early C18 straight flight closed string stair to the second floor with square newel, turned balusters with knops and moulded pine handrail. It also retains several 2-panel doors.

Reasons for Listing

Included for its special architectural interest as an C18 house of definite character near Monmouth town centre.
