Ffynnon Beris

Grade: II

Location
Located in the garden of Tyn-y-Ffynnon on the east side of a farm track running northwards from the A 4086 at Nant Peris.

History
Of uncertain date the well, also known as Fynnon y Sant, is dedicated to St Beris, of whom very little is known other than that his Festival was celebrated on 11 December. The existing structure probably dates from the C17, the wall enclosing it being added only in the C18 when it is recorded by Thomas Pennant, who also refers to the fish kept in the well.

Slate steps or seats on 4 sides of a rectangular well basin; revetment wall with 3 recesses on east side; entrance opening on west.

Reason for Listing
Included as a well-preserved holy well with a long and well-documented history as a sacred site.
