History

Pair of semi-detached houses circa 1914. No 5 was birthplace (October 27 1914) and home until early manhood of poet Dylan Thomas (1914-1954). The house and Cwmdonkin area were important formative influences upon Thomas and feature in many of his works for example the house is the setting of ‘A Child’s Christmas in Wales’.

Exterior

Pair of semi-detached houses; two storeys, pebbledash elevations, but first floor front tile-hung, hipped slate roof central red brick chimney. Each house has bracketed tile-hung gable over two storey splayed bay window No 5 has segmentally-headed horned sash windows with small panes in upper sashes and larger panes in lower sashes. Windows of number 6 have inappropriate replacement glazing. Entrances to sides (later flat-roofed porch to No 5; later lean-to porch to No 6). 2 windows to first floor. To rear, long wings with first floor splayed oriel windows to gabled ends.

No 6 included for group value.

Reasons for Listing

No 5 listed for its long and very close association with life and works of Dylan Thomas, a writer of international importance.
