Exterior

Description: The pair of houses may be late C18 in origin, but exterior detail is largely the result of a mid C19 remodelling. Well coursed and squared local stone, with slate roof; stone axial stacks set to rear. 3 storeys, each a single unit, double pile plan (the rear elevations were originally of less height, and were raised in brick). Outer entrance at either side: doorway to No 40 renewed, but No 42 retains original opening with overlight, and stone lintel enriched with a central rosette. Flanking windows are 8-pane horned sashes.

The houses are of special interest as good, well-preserved examples of vernacular town houses using local materials.
