History

Early C19 gateway, part of the extensive programme involving remodelling of house c 1806 and landscaping of grounds. Wall shown onTithe Map of 1842 abutting house E at junction of old and new wings, as now, but extending W towards the wall joining N and S gatehouses; this latter area probably replanned and most of W section of wall demolished when W side of stable courtyard re-developed 1870s.

Exterior

Gateway comprises tall ashlar piers with shallow pyramidal caps surmounted by large stone orb finials, swept metal gates with curved braces, decorative rail and spear finials. Adjoining wall is of roughly dressed stone and abuts the house to E with a small surviving section to W.

Reasons for Listing

Included as a structure relating to the early C19 replanning of house and garden and as an imposing entrance gateway; group value with other buildings of Ewenny Priory in particular the house itself, the Stable Court, Ewenny Priory Church and Church of St Michael
