The abbey was founded in 1131 by Cistercian monks. From 1269, the ambitious building of the current building began. In its prime, it was a magnificent masterpiece of Gothic architecture but, in 1536, Tintern surrendered in the first round of Henry VIII's dissolution of the monasteries. Now peaceful and picturesque, Tintern was a centre of industry and trade from the 12th to the 16th centuries.
