Almshouse pair. Circa 1912 by Ernest Newton. Red brick with raised quoins. Moulded
wooden cornice to plain tiled hipped roof with tall panelled stacks-off ridge- and
4 hipped dormers. Centred return gable with bargeboards and "Venetian" window type
casement on first floor. Single storey and attics. 2 bays to left of entrance arch,
3 to right, irregular casements. Central entrance arch with moulded brick impost
blocks and keystone. Half-glazed door behind. Subsidiary entrance (No44a) with flat
hood over in right hand return front.
Whiteley Village was provided by William Whiteley of Whiteley's stores for thrifty
old folk and was laid out on an octagonal plan by Frank Atkinson , employing leading
architects of the day.
