GV II House. C16. A main range with cross-wing to left and, to right, the end bay of a taller range which contains a carriage entrance. This bay once belonged to the adjacent house (qv. Item 6/108) and was associated with its C16 use as an inn. Timber framed and plastered, with remains of old panelled plasterwork. Main range is plaintiled at front and slated at rear; the cross- wing is pantiled; section to right is pantiled to front and slated to rear. 2 storeys. Upper floor jettied to front, with a jettied loft over the carriage entrance. C18 and C19 casement windows, mostly with mid C20 square-leaded glass. 2 doorways have boarded and battened doors. Carriage entrance lintol is supported by solid braces. Good studded gate, probably a C17 addition. Internal stack between main range and wing, with 2 shafts in rear roof slope, one of narrow brick. Rear portion of cross-wing much altered, with a mid C20 monopitch roof. Interior. 3-bay main range, 4-bay cross wing, both with some good heavy studding, visible mainly on the upper floor. Gable end of wing has sill of oriel window. A one-bay room at front of wing has closely-set plain joists. Intact C17 upper fireplace. Bay containing carriage entrance raised by c.lm to accord with later work to right. The house takes it name from a malting which stood by the stream at the rear until early C20.
