Railway station building; 1866-68, on London and South-Western Railway; design
thought to have been derived from earlier prototypes by Sir William Tite for
L.S.W.R. London stock brick, with stucco architraves to window openings; slate roof
with overhanging bracketed eaves. Brick stacks. Sash windows with central vertical
glazing bars and horns. Seven bay front elevation with projecting two bay end wings
with brick quoins; moulded band at first floor, with canopy at same level across
ground floor of recessed centre wing; bracketed eaves. Segmental arches with
keystones and shouldered architraves to first floor; flat arches to window openings
with similarly shaped architraves to ground floor window openings in side wings.
Semi-circular arched arcading with brick pilasters and stuccoed impost bands and
arches to ground floor openings, including centre doorway, in centre wing. A brick
wing with parapet and windows in round-arched arcading to right hand and left hand.
Platform elevation similar to entrance elevation but with doorways in inner bays of
end wings and with projecting canopy at first floor level over platform. Information
