HUMSHAUGH
HUMSHAUGH VILLAGE (North side)
Garden wall to West End Terrace and Evans Almshouse, with attached pant
GV
II
Garden wall with pant, later C19 with older pant re-set. Wall snecked stone, pant squared stone with ashlar dressings, on rock-faced base. Wall with arched coping and rounded corners, returned to link with attached outbuilding at west end of West End Terrace (q.v.) and outbuilding to east of Evans Almshouse (q.v.). Four gateways with monolithic arched piers. Square pant at south-east corner: each face with moulded pediment on raised pilasters; tap at front missing at time of survey; small opening, with cast-iron door on right return. Cast-iron globe finial on moulded stone base. Stone built into wall on right of pant has raised shaped panel with incised inscription ME/ ST DAVIDS DA(illegible)/ 1854.
Historical note: Marion Evans Essex (b Mary Ann Essex around 1791, d1868) made many charitable donations. These included, in 1854, around £1,000 to pipe water to Humshaugh, which probably included building the pant, which appears to have originally stood in the centre of the road. The carved stone set in the wall was probably associated with the pant. The Evans almshouse, around which the garden wall was built, was also funded by Marion and also has an inscription dating it to St David’s day, but in 1864. 1854 and 1864 were the 25th and 35th anniversary respectively of the death of Marion’s husband, David.
