Alfred Morris Gelsthorpe (1892 to 1968) served with distinction in the Artists Rifles in the First World War. Ordained in 1920, he soon became involved in missionary work in Africa. 1939 to 1945 he was Assistant Bishop of Egypt and Sudan, and 1945 to 1952 Bishop of the Sudan. Returning home to Nottinghamshire in 1953 aged 65, he was Rector at Bingham until 1966. The platter is decorated with a bishops mitre above a shield depicting a dove and tropical tree, and sunrise over a river. The Latin motto -Lux Fiat- means Let there be Light (Genesis 1.3).
