Almost hidden towards the top is a frieze of eight shields: 1 a ladder encircled by intertwined rope (or snakes if this is the stairway to heaven). 2 a silver cross between (perhaps) a loaf and a carafe of water. 3 a stonemasons mallet and a chisel. 4 a stone pillar with base and capital. 5 a hammer and tongs, engineering. 6 five hexagons, representing azo dyes. 7 a tunic for clothing. 8 two spindles or distaffs with thread, yarn-making.
