GV II
Post Office, now house. c1840, perhaps to the designs of Anthony Salvin,
who was active at Helmingham Hall (qv) in c1841. Brick in Flemish bond with
moulded brick stack between second and third range. Pantile roofs with swept
eaves and ornamental vergeboards to gables on returns and trio of gabled
dormers. Two storeys with outshut to the rear. Segmental arched windows with
casements of original design flanking entrance which is set under a gabled
canopy porch. Secondary stacks to corner of left. Picturesque style combining
vernacular forms with those from the 'cottage orne' tradition. Cottages 3-8,
15-20, the Old Post Office near the cross roads, and the Old Forge form a
group.
