4/10009 Estate Cottages,
nos 19 and 20
GV II
Pair of estate cottages, c1840, perhaps to the designs of Anthony Salvin,
who was active at Helmingham Hall (qv). in c1841. Brick in Flemish bond with
moulded stack to party wall. Pantile roof with swept eaves. One storey with
one fable-facing dormer to each unit, the dormer off axis with openings below.
Ground-floor openings of each unit unevenly spaced, but bilaterally
symmetrical to the pair. Flat-arched windows with casement of an authentic
design. Doors of an authentic design set in four-centred arches. Picturesque
style combining vernacular forms with those of the'cottage orne' tradition.
Cottages 3-8, 15-20, the Estate Yard, the Old Post Office near the cross
roads to the north, and the Old Forge form a group.
