4/10013 The Old Forge

GV II

Forge. c1840, perhaps to the designs of Anthony Salvin, who was active at
Helmingham Hall (qv) in c1841. Brick in Flemish bond with pair of angled
brick stacks flanking two-storey gable-facing range near centre of single-
storey block; ventilation louvre to ridge. The right wing longer than the
left with a pair of double doors of C20 date; fenestration of ground floor of
3: 3: 2: 1: 1. Ornamental vergeboards to gabled returns and facing gable.
Interior: remains of original forge largely intact. Picturesque style
combining vernacular forms with those of the 'cottage orne' tradition.
Cottages 3-8, 15-20, the Estate Yard, the Old Post Office, and the Old
Forge form a group.
