Abbey

GV II

Gatepiers and gates. Probably C19, possibly incorporating medieval fragments.
Limestone ashlar. Square section with projecting base, coping and ball finials;
each pier with apparently medieval shield reset in slight recess to centre. Short
sections of ramped wall attached to each pier incorporate what may be reused
fragments of medieval window tracery. Piers are linked by C19 wrought iron gates
with decorated overthrow. A Cistercian abbey was founded at Bruern in 1146 but
has left me traces above ground (q.v. under Bruern Abbey and Red Brick Cottage).
Included for group value.
