DAWLEY LITTLE DAWLEY
1.
5362 Holly Road
Nos 15 and 158
SJ 60 NE 31/165 12.7.77

II GV

2.
C18, 1½ storey red brick cottages with a 2-storey early to mid C19 splay sided
extension of one bay to north-east corner and a lower extension to south front of
No 15. Gabled dormers on eaves, with plain barge boards. Old tile gable end roofs.
External tall brick chimney stacks to No 15 and large stack below ridge to No 15A.
Inside No 15 however, are the remains of 2 cruck trusses, apparently the surviving
bay of a C15 cruck built house. On the north side of the cruck at the east end has
been truncated and tie beam of re-used timber inserted, resulting in the raising of
the front elevation. The west gable end has C18 or possibly C17 hand-made bricks,
irregularly bonded. No 15A has a slightly higher roof line and was probably remodelled
in the C17. The exposed portion of its west gable has principal rafters with V-struts
and there is timber framing in the east gable. The cruck construction of No 15 may
continue inside No 15A.
