Nos. 14 (Ryland House), 16 and 16A
(Formerly listed as No 14 (Ryland House)

II
Pair of houses, latterly one, now divided. Early C18 with mid-to late
C18 and probably mid-C19 alterations and additions. Red brick with
painted sandstone ashlar dressings. Rendered side and rear walls lined
as ashlar. Hipped plain tile roof. Two storeys and attic over
basement. Plinth, stone plat band, stone frieze and modillion cornice above
first floor and dentil brick eaves cornice to attic (plat band and cornice
returned up to stacks). External brick end stacks (left-hand truncated)
and brick ridge stack at rear. Three bays; depressed-arched glazing bar
sashes (with thick bars) , moulded architraves and moulded stone cills.
Central straight-headed first-floor window has lugged architrave with
scrolled shoulders, egg and dart enrichment to reveals and raised keystone
with scrolled motif. Pair of attic glazing bar sashes with exposed
boxes. Central blocked doorway with inserted small-paned window, and
stone doorcase consisting of lugged moulded architrave, narrow pilaster
strips, console brackets with acanthus ornament, frieze and segmental
pediment. Right-hand return front: plat band and cornice returning
to stack. First-floor plat band to right. Two glazing-bar sashes, central
first-floor glazing-bar sash and ground-floor glazing-bar sashes (one
tripartite), all with exposed boxes. Rear: painted red sandstone
plinth and plat band. Three bays; glazing bar sashes (ground-floor with
segmental heads) with exposed boxes. Four stone steps up to boarded door
to right. Later wing (No. 16) adjoining to south-east. Mid-to late
C18. Red brick with plain tile roof. Two storeys. Plat band and
dentil brick eaves cornice. Two first-floor plate-glass sashes with
painted stone cills and wooden lintels and central ground-floor plate-
glass sash with painted stone cill and lintel and straight joints beneath
(probably former doorway). Early C18 door (probably former front door
from No. 14) to right with 6 raised and fielded panels and early C19
doorcase consisting of moulded architrave, panelled pilaster strips,
frieze and shaped brackets supporting flat hood. Three curved sandstone
steps up to door (possibly also from No. 14). C20 half-glazed door
to left with rectangular overlight and painted stone lintel. Interior
of No. 14 (Ryland House): much altered in C19. Rear entrance hall has
c.1700 fireplace with bolection-moulded stone surround. Right-hand
rear room with c.1700 bolection-moulded dado panelling and C19 Jacobean-
style fireplace and overmantel. A number of bedrooms have fireplaces
with late C18 cast-iron basket grates. C18 moulded cornices in some
rooms. C18 doors with 6 raised and fielded panels and panelled reveals.
Many windows with moulded architraves and panelled internal shutters.
The interior of that part of No.16 which occupies the front of No. 14
was not inspected but is reported to contain some early C18 panelling.
No. 14 (Ryland House) appears to have been altered in the C18 by the
addition of an attic storey (see straight joints in right-hand return
front suggesting former 2-span roof). It was also probably extended
to the rear (see straight joints and break in plat band). The house
has been divided and partly incorporated with its neighbour (No. 16)
at some time in the C19. It was probably then that the doorway was
blocked and the door and steps reused in No. 16. The interior layout
was also altered.
