A church has existed on the site since the 13th century and in the early 19th century it was enlarged to accommodate the increased size of the parish. However, general deterioration called for substantial restoration and in 1889 demolition began whilst seeking to retain as much of the 13th century chancel as possible. July 1890 saw the final completion of the rebuild and re-consecration.
