Description

ST22NE WEST MONKTON CP

6/219 Pigeon House Cottage

II

Pair of semi-detached cottages, now one dwelling. Circa 1820, reroofed late C20. Red sandstone random rubble, probably
originally rendered, Has stone lintels to first floor windows, red brick dressings, quoins standing proud and
alternately spaced, dentil style brick cornice, double Roman tile roof, brick stacks gable ends. Plan: pair of single
cell dwellings now 2 cell. 2 storeys, 3 bays all C20 3-light casements, first floor under flaw stone lintels incised
with keystones, ground floor segmental headed windows in outer bays, inserted casement into original right hand cottage
doorway, entrance now left through ribbed door with inserted light, pentice porch, carried on wooden columns. Interior:
both gable end fireplaces have chamfered lintels with bread ovens intact, stairs rise at rear. It is unusual to find a
pair of workers cottages with so much ornamentation not in sight of a large house.
