Office building, extension to R.A.C. Club. 1911-15 by Henry Metcalf
and Thomas R. Greig. Stone faced, slate roof. Monumental but
restrained classical composition with a few Beaux Arts details. 5
storeys and basement. Symmetrical 9 bay front. Channelled ground and
1st floor read as one basement storey. Doorways in bays 1, 5 and 9
with architraves, pulvinated friezes and cornices linked to eared
architraved segmental arched and triple keystoned windows above. The
upper floors have architrave surrounds with cornices on 2nd floor and
tablets on 3rd floor. Those in line with doorways are vertically
linked in single architrave to 2nd and 3rd floors with enriched
aprons and prominent open segmental pediments on console corbels
above 3rd floor. The frieze of the crowning entablature is
broken by the heads of 4th floor windows; dentilled bed to modillion
cornice and balustraded parapet. The horizontal articulation of the
facade lines through with that of the adjoining R.A.C. facade.
