The Mercer Memorial Clock Tower erected in 1903 in memory of John Mercer who was an industrial chemist that revolutionised the dyeing of cotton with the invention of “Mercerisation” which improved the manufacturing process of cotton. Mercer died at home in 1866 and was buried in St Bartholomew's Church, Great Harwood. Funds for his commemoration were provided by his daughter Maria, and the clock tower was unveiled in Great Harwood in 1903.
