ACCRINGTON ST. JAMES STREET SD 72 NE Monument to Adam Westwell 7/31 c. 40 metres west of Church of St. James - GV II
Monument to Adam Westwell (died 1859) member of Accrington Brass Band, dated 1860. Stone. Pedestal of square section architecturally composed to resemble the top stage of a Gothic church tower, bearing a draped musical instrument in place of a spire: square base, moulded plinth, diagonal buttresses, chamfered cornice, parapet pierced by quatrefoils with crocketed pinnacles at the corners. Each face of the pedestal has a panel in a multifoil arch (with carving in the spandrels which includes musical instruments); inscription in panel on west side states that monument was erected by members and friends of the Accrington Brass Band in remembrance of Adam Westwell "WHO FOR MANY YEARS WAS AN ACCOMPLISHED OPHICLEIDE PLAYER IN THE ABOVE BAND MDCCCLX". (Ophicleide was a keyed brass wind instrument).
