A Grade II* Listed Building in Burley, Rutland

Church of the Holy Cross, Burley

North west aspect. Early C14 tower of three stages. Quite flat angle buttresses, and note the repaired crack above the Decorated Gothic west window. Parapet with battlements and huge gargoyles, complete figures of men and beasts, at each angle. Tall openings to bell chambers, with a transom. The lancet window in the north aisle next to the tower also looks medieval. The rest was rebuilt by JL Pearson in 1869-70. This includes the chancel with its roof sweeping down over the aisles, straight-headed windows with heavy, cusped, sixfoiled tracery, clerestory windows and coped, gabled porch. Note the different styles of cross used as finials on the gables of the porch, nave and chancel. (Photo Mar 2008).
