Description

FREDERICK ROAD
1.
5104
Edgbaston B15
Nos 31 and 32
SP 0585 NE 40/15
II
2.
A pair of C1840-50 semi-detached Calthorpe Estate villas, red brick with stucco
dressings. Presumably designed as symmetrical plan, No 31 has 3 bay front
with recessed coach house but No 32 has 4th bay, absorbing the coach house,
an early extension in a matching style to the original 3 bays. Half hipped
slate roof overall, with moulded flat eaves. Tall cornered chimney stacks,
that in centre with stucco cornice, square pots. First floor windows have
architrave surrounds with eared feet, panelled sills. The ground floor windows
have same architraves rising from plinth, with cornices and very shallow pediments
surmounted by diminutive acroteria. Left hand ground floor window replaced
by late C19 canted bay. Entrances have engaged Ionic fluted columns supporting
deep entablatures; panelled reveals to 4 panel doors, rectangular fanlights.
The slightly recessed 2 storey gig house wing of No 31 has shallow stucco
parapet band with scroll supported shallow block pediment over centre. Single
glazing bar sash window to first floor under gauged brick flat arch. Basket-Handle
gauged brick arch to coach house with later built our doors.
