Description

GARVESTONE STATION LANE TG 00 NW Thuxton 6/31 Church of St.Paul 30.5.60 - I Parish church. Medieval and later. Flint with some galetting to north. Ashlar and some brick dressings. Plain tile and slate roofs. West tower; aisleless nave with north porch and former south aisle; chancel. C13 staged west tower with a truncated octagonal bell stage. Projecting stair turret to south. 2-light Y-traceried west window with one rectangular sound hole above. Stone and tile broaches reduce tower to octagonal top storey which has no bell openings. Blocked arcade to south with 3 2-light Victorian traceried windows beneath former arches. 3 3-light late-Medieval clearstorey windows with rectangular heads and cusped lights. Reconstructed north doorway and porch - all modern except for 2 surviving nook shafts with polygonal bell capitals. Lower part of north wall retains some Cll or early C12 masonry with one surviving ferruginous conglomerate eastern quoin. 2 fine 3-light panel-traceried windows with 4-centred heads. Chancel with C13 plain-chamfered priest's door and a modern 2-light Y-traceried window to north. Interesting C13triple-lancet east window with nascent bar tracery. 2 C13 lancets of unequal width to south and one modern lancet in blocked archway to former south aisle. C15 double-ogee and wave moulded tower arch on polygonal responds with crenellated carved capitals. C19 chancel arch in late Medieval style. Former 3-bay arcade with partly obscured and rendered quatrefoil piers. Plain-chamfered arches of 2 orders. Former double piscinae and double sedilia of which only one cusped piscina arch remains. Tiny aumbry at floor level to south side of chancel. Victorian carved stone reredos arcade in C14 style. Some surviving fragments of Medieval glass in west window and north chancel window. East window, with crucifixion scene, of 1896.
