These arches, once one of the finest mid 12th c works in England, have been unlucky. Succumbing to the "advanced" taste of the Batemans they were put on a hill to be eroded by the weather. Plaster casts were taken in the 19th c when they were in better condition, but these were destroyed in the Crystal Palace Fire. They survive in 20 lithographs by Lewis (1852)
