Description

DAWLISH
STARCROSS

SX 9780 16 Middlewood
(Hillside)

5/131 11

Detached house. Late Cl7. Rendered cob, corrugated iron roof, probably
replacing thatch. Small one room dwelling with side passage, cob stack and
flanking winder stair at north end; lean-to in cob, one storey, at north
end. Continuous one-storey lean-to on back not of special interest. Two
storeys, 2 windows C19 or C20 casements, with horizontal bars to first floor,
small-paned lower floor right. Plank doors to wide opening, far left, and
to lean-to, right. Gables plain, stack to right. Back has steel casements
in extension. Ground floor fireplace has chamfered bressumer to run-out
stops and the chimney breast with jambs formed in cob. Roof has heavy
central truss, and foot of one other in small bedroom; large purlins with
pegs to former rafters. The passage at ground floor separated from parlour
by wattle and daub screen partition. A good survival in an area with much
rebuilding or replacement.
