Description

LUSTLEIGH
SX 78 SE

1/183 Willmead Farmhouse
-

- II

Farmhouse. C16 or earlier, with later additions. Stone rubble with thatched roof.
In centre of ridge a large granite ashlar chimneystack with thatch weatherings and
tapered top. Probably a 3-room plan originally; not clear if stack backs on to a
cross-passage or stands in front of entrance, forming a lobby entry (which would
make it a rare house in Devon). 2 storeys, with single-storey addition to right.
4-window front to original range, the second bay from right having a 2-storeyed
stone entrance-porch. Ground storey of porch has an old wooden outer door frame,
probably round-headed (under creeper) with durn jambs; panelled, early C18 door at
rear of porch. Windows have C20 wood casements with mullions and leaded panes.
Closer inspection refused, but house is said to have a 'minstrels' gallery and an
old roof. This is clearly a house of considerable quality and is likely to have
features of interest inside.
