Bovey Tracey
11/93 Barn about 4 metres south of Nos.
- 3 and 4 Town Hall Place
GV II
Barn at rear of house, on east side of curtilage. Probably C17. Stone and cob.
Tarred slated roof with clay ridge tiles, hipped at rear end.
Interior: in rear gable a hoist consisting of a horizontal wooden pole projecting
from the wall with a large wooden wheel at one end. C19 roof trusses. This barn,
together with the farmhouse (Nos.3 and 4 Town Hall Place) is the only town farm
surviving in anything like its original form in Bovey Tracey, for which there is
evidence of an open field system of cultivation (W G Hoskins and H P R Finberg,
Devonshire Studies, 1952, p.278).
