Description

CLYST ST GEORGE EXMOUTH ROAD
SX 98 NE
2/12 Manor House
-

- II

Detached house, probably once a farmhouse. C17 or earlier, much remodelled.
Roughcast cob, stone footings, with some brick; gabled end thatched roof. Probably
formerly a 3-room, through-passage plan house; the service end (to the right) is
heated by an external end stack, partly of cob, with 3 set-offs and a brick shaft.
The hall rear lateral stack and the adjacent stair turret were originally external,
but are now enclosed within a large rear wing, probably C18 or C19. The inner room
remained unheated. 2 storeys.
Front: 3-window range; 12-pane hornless sash windows to 1st floor, lintels at
eaves level; coupled 12-pane hornless sash windows to either side of porch, each
under brick hood moulds; simple open timber porch, half glazed door.
Rear: 3-light gabled dormer window; C19 and C20 casement windows of 2 and 3 lights;
similar C19 windows to left-hand end elevations.
